Why Great Signage Is More Than Just a Screen

In many churches today, digital signage is the first “voice” someone encounters—whether they’re a first-time visitor or a long-time member. It welcomes, informs, and helps people feel grounded in what’s happening around them. But poorly designed signage can just as easily overwhelm, confuse, or clash with the space’s spiritual tone.

At EDC, we’ve worked with worship spaces of all sizes to develop digital signage that quietly enhances the worship experience. It’s not about flash—it’s about communication that’s clear, purposeful, and aligned with your mission. A thoughtful layout not only shares information; it reinforces community.

How to Lay It Out Right: Placement, Design, and Content That Serve Your Congregation

Creating an effective digital signage layout isn’t about installing as many screens as possible—it’s about putting the right content in the right places. Here’s how to do it well:

Prioritize High-Impact Zones

Place screens where people naturally pause or pass through:

  • Lobby/Entryways: Greet visitors, list service times, highlight urgent announcements.
  • Fellowship halls & hallways: Rotate weekly schedules, ministry promos, and upcoming events.
  • Children’s check-in & ministry desks: Share safety messaging, directions, or reminders.
  • Near restrooms or stairwells: Use simple, reinforcing slides (short text, minimal motion).
  • Wayfinding: Add dynamic arrows or maps showing “Youth Room → This Way” or “Prayer Chapel Upstairs.”
  • Outdoor LED signs: Perfect for service times, scripture of the day, or public events. (Check zoning rules for brightness and cycling.

Design for Comfort, Not Clutter

Keep your church’s personality and purpose in mind when designing slides:

  • Use your brand elements: Fonts, colors, logos, and images from real church life.
  • Avoid visual overload: No flashing transitions or fast-moving elements—favor calm fades or simple slide-ins.
  • Incorporate warmth: Welcome slides, rotating scriptures, seasonal encouragements, and shout-outs to volunteers create a personal connection.

Content That Connects

Rotate a balance of spiritual encouragement and logistical info:

  • Announcements and deadlines
  • Weekly service or ministry schedule
  • Verses or devotionals tied to the liturgical season
  • Event recaps (e.g., photo slides from a recent mission trip)
  • QR codes linking to newsletters, apps, or sign-ups
  • Personalized welcomes (e.g., “Welcome Back, College Students!”)
  • Set slides to auto-remove after events end to avoid outdated info lingering on-screen.

What Good Looks Like: Signage That’s Seen, Understood, and Remembered

A well-planned signage system does more than inform—it serves. When executed correctly, here’s what your church community will experience:

  • Effortless navigation: People know where to go without asking.
  • Stronger engagement: Members stay informed without information overload.
  • Visual consistency: Your church’s look and feel carries into every screen.
  • Volunteer ease: Teams can manage updates using familiar tools like Canva, Google Slides, or ProPresenter.
  • Outdoor visibility: Passersby see scripture, service times, or events clearly—even from the street.

As a general rule, text size should be 1/20 of the farthest viewing distance. So for a 40-foot hallway, use text at least 2 feet tall. Stick with high-contrast fonts like white on navy or black on tan. Avoid thin or decorative typefaces that may be hard to read from a distance.

Helping Your Message Land—and Linger

The most effective digital signage in a church isn’t just readable—it feels like part of the ministry.

When you take time to align layout, tone, and content with your community’s rhythm, signage becomes more than a tool—it becomes a ministry in itself. From calm transitions to community highlights, your screens can quietly reflect the care, clarity, and connection your church stands for.

With EDC’s guidance, your team—whether staff or volunteers—can confidently manage digital signage that looks great, functions seamlessly, and truly supports your congregation’s needs. Because in a worship space, every message matters.
