Our History
Explore the significant moments that shaped EDC’s development and growth.
1955
Electronic Design Company is founded in St Paul, MN by Wade Tobin & Sam Bridges with specializations in audio communications and telephone interconnection.
The company started by manufacturing and selling a preset for musical organs that Sam had designed before landing a Rauland school intercom system dealership for western Wisconsin.
Following success in that area, they were given the Minnesota territory.
1969
Federal Government passes the Carter Phone ACT, allowing users to own their own telephones, which lead to EDC selling business telephone systems.
Subsequently, EDC has their first year of $1 million in sales.
1980
Tobin & Bridges sell Telephone Systems Sales & Service Division to refine their service offerings.
1985
Company is acquired by three investors from the Duluth/Superior area and begins expansion into voice, video and data networking integration.
1990
Awarded contract with MNDOT to integrate fiber optic copper wire and wireless signal transmission to the highway traffic management systems.
2001
Logo updated.
2002
Sales, Engineers and Technician staff from Impulse Group, LLC join EDC to expand their customer reach.
2005
Service and Consulting Divisions (EDCS) formed. Another employee acquires partial shares in the company, expanding the ownership group.
EDC Celebrates 50 Years in business with current and former employees, clients and vendors (as well as multiple bands and musicians!) on-site at their Shoreview location.
2010
EDC moves from Shoreview, MN to Minneapolis & updates their logo.
2013
Company transitions ownership to Joe Kankovsky, marking the first time since 1985 that the company is 100% owned by a sole employee.
EDC defines its mission as Our client’s best and most complete resource for Mission Critical, Risk Managed Audio and Video Communication Systems.
2019
Logo updated.
2024
Ownership group expands to include four key employees:
- Doug Beutel: Controller
- Ed Wiyninger: Senior Project Manager
- Kent Stevenson: Senior Systems Design Engineer
- Seth Baker: VP of Sales & Marketing.
